Trouble with blacklists: what do you think?

I just posted an item on the StopBadware.org blog that concludes with some interesting and important questions about spam and malware blacklists. Please take a look at http://blog.stopbadware.org/2008/12/01/trouble-with-blacklists and let us know what you think.

Thats what I get for staying out of the loop for too long. A delayed response. – And then the responses are closed on the blog!! – Well, I’ve taken the time writing this and I’m not letting it going to waste.

In response to your blog post:

I remember having a semilar discussion about this topic when Stopbadware and Google had this in the google groups.

I even remember being a little harsh in one of my postings in response to McCarthyism. You may want to check the conversations if it is still available.

In response to Rex on the blog – I run a small netblock and have a few servers. I feel like you – it is my responsibility to check the blacklists that I know. But even when I have fully disclosed information and updated whois and DNS, as well as all the required and optional email addresses available – there’s usually no one that will contact me through them.

So far I’ve only had one experience of being blacklisted. That’s 8 years ago, and even though it wasn’t my fault, I don’t feel bad about it. It was neccesary. I had no problems getting off any of the blacklists once I fixed the problem.

There is a few good places on the internet to check blacklists, and even if they send out messages when someone gets listed, there is no guarantee that the message reaches the correct destination.

Each blacklist has it’s own terms and usually retests existing entries after some time. But if you’re on one of those blacklists, then there’s most likely a very good reason for you to be on that list. It’s a small price to pay to do a little work to get off the list again.

To me, any blacklist operator that contacts me gets a plus, but if I end up on a blacklist there’s a reason. If I don’t respond or fix the issue, then by all means, let me and my network stay on that blacklist. No reason for the blacklist operator to expect anything or do anything further, except perhaps reconsider the blacklist entry by testing after some time. The time period being from a few months to a year imho.
