About

BadwareBusters.org is a community of people working together to fight back against viruses, spyware, and other bad software. To learn how to use this site, click here.

The site is brought to you by StopBadware, a not-for-profit organization based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. Assistance in starting up the site was provided by Consumer Reports WebWatch, a now discontinued project of Consumers Union, and the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University.

StopBadware cultivates a network of individuals and organizations that share a common goal of eliminating viruses, spyware, and other bad software. (See What is Badware?) We connect the members of this network with actionable knowledge they can use to fight badware effectively.

By fighting badware, StopBadware and its constituents are helping to build a world in which people are the masters of their own machines. In this world, we each make informed decisions about how and when our hardware, software, and network connections are used.

StopBadware was started at Harvard University’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society under the direction of Berkman faculty co-directors Prof. Jonathan Zittrain and Prof. John Palfrey. In January 2010, StopBadware became a standalone non-profit organization. The organization is supported by several prominent technology companies, such as Google, PayPal, and Mozilla. Our board of directors consists of top experts in the field, like Prof. Palfrey and Internet pioneers Vint Cerf and Esther Dyson.
